The War in Heaven

April 7, 2008 by ryandbeckwithillustrator

Wow, I’ve really been out of it huh?
No matter, right to it:
I’ve (not so) recently completed a comic book with Will Kenton called The War in Heaven. Its a pre-biblical epic concerning the fall of Lucifer (Samael), after Milton’s Paradise Lost. It was a thrill to work on, and I hope you all pick up a copy.

Here is the link to The War in Heaven website. (Buy it here.)
Here is Will’s blog (note the banner created by yours truly),
And here are some sample pages:

Little Horse Music

June 30, 2007 by ryandbeckwithillustrator

I recently completed some artwork for the new Little Horse album. If you haven’t heard of them yet, get yourself (and your browser) over to their myspace page, and have a listen. Not only does it feature the new album art, but also their extremely solid musicianship. Its rare that I really get excited over a commisioned piece, but on this one I certainly did. The brothers Horsley (Jo and E.) have an excellent sensability that I really admire: a bit flamboyant, yet elegant and nostalgic. Much of the same qualities I strive for in my own work. So go check it out, and come back later for the full scan, which I will post when it becomes available.

Peace!

New Illustration!!!

April 4, 2007 by ryandbeckwithillustrator

I’ve been thinking and reading a lot about possible connections between ancient civilizations. While some are certainly plausible, others are pure fantasy, and I’m a sucker for a good story… so here is an interpretation of one of these encounters. More to come soon!

New Illustrations!!!

March 20, 2007 by ryandbeckwithillustrator

I updated my site today with two new watercolor illustrations that I did recently. They can be viewed here, or by simply clicking above. They are meditations on two substances: Absinthe and Mustard Gas… what do they have in common? Maybe nothing, maybe quite a bit, you decide. Either way, enjoy!

Art as Property?

March 16, 2007 by ryandbeckwithillustrator

So I was attempting to begin a painting, on this frosty St. Patricks Day eve; sheltering from the curious precipitation outside which my roomate so aptly likened to “falling Dip ‘n Dots,” when I stumbled upon a noteworthy article. One of my favorite blogs:“One Good Move” posted a link to Jonathan Lethem’s essay from Harper’s about plagiarism (actually, One Good Move posted it twice because “not all of you read it.”). It is indeed an amazing read, and I would similarly insist that anyone and everyone (especially creative professionals!) give it the time it deserves. It is a bit of a commitment to get through, but thoroughly rewarding. For a young, insecure and paranoid artist simultaneously entering the worlds of proffesional art creation and online proliferation, Letham’s points on intellectual property are refreshing, and personally very timely as I have been contemplating the risks/incentives of spec work, stock illustration, and pro bono commsions among other delemas. I hope you will all give this article a bit of your precious time (as much as I can attribute the ownership of that time to you) and consider the merits of the copyright laws to which we so jealously cleave.
Luck of the Irish to you and your liver!

Cheers!

NEW SITE!!!!

March 5, 2007 by ryandbeckwithillustrator

Well surprise surprise… the site update is 2 months late. I blame the tardiness on a combination of my inconvenient need to obtain rent/food/hooking and boozing money, my laughable incompetence in web design and my computer’s infuriating refusal to respond to voice comands/sobbed threats. Im afraid its not totally finished, but look out for more images and posts coming soon. Humorously enough I have no idea how to update this blogs appearance, so until I figure that out, enjoy the site, and please email me or post a reply here if you have any technical issues, nit-picks, or suggestions.
Thanks!

Minor Rant

December 28, 2006 by ryandbeckwithillustrator

Greetings all from the vacuum of time and constructive intention that exists between Christmas and New Years (at least for me…). My phone has been silent, my mailbox is empty (not that I’m checking either of them), and my sketchbook has lain forgotten over the past week. However today while reading a few blogs in a tentative first step towards reordering my life, I came upon something upsetting, and decided to take the time to comment on artistic responsiblity. Wonkette has posted a “super-secret advance copy” of a graphic novel produced by the NRA promoting paranoid, intolerant, and violent politics. Certainly everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is something I concider to be a destructive and regressive message. Here’s the kicker: this seems to be a beautifully executed set of artwork. As a young artist, developing technical profficiency/excellence, and a distictive style are paramount… however another consideration which must be undertaken is the responsiblity of the artist. As strange as it may sound, I hope this artist truly believes in his/her message. It would be far worse, in my opinion for this artist to simply lend his/her skill towards creating a piece of artwork with a negative message for monetary gain or otherwise. Art is power, especially in an accessable and widely distributable format (e.g. graphic novels, printed illustration), so indifferance can be just as dangerous as malicious intent. This is certainly something I will be mediating on in the New Year, as I cannot claim well considered positive intent behind my every drawing, and I hope you give it thought as well.
So please check out the Wonkette, please support responsible artwork, and please use your voice in a positive, rational, and thoughtful way.
Best of luck in the New Year!

I’ve added a new illustration to my main page… you can check it out here.
It will adorn the front of my new mailer which I should have in my hands next week. The reverse image is exclusively posted above…oh boy! I hope everyone has a drunken and fattening holiday. I’ve already had my first Thanksgiving dinner, and eagerly look forward to the second.
Cheers!
